These sites use the same fonts and database and derivatives of it, despite some of them are quite different. The most similar are Neatfonts and Betterfonts. I suggest the new owner considers the possibility of merging these two sites by redirecting traffic from NF to BF which is the most popular by far.
The fonts are freeware or shareware, and have been gathered from reputable free font archives such as 1001freefonts and Dafont. There has not been a single request to remove a font, but rather some requests from font authors who wish to add their fonts.
The websites except Fontso used to be hosted on a very cheap DreamHost account (they have been on my own server for a few months now). That worked fine, except DH added restrictions when Fonts500 was on the front page of LifeHacker and del.icio.us at the same time. I also had to remove the custom preview function temporarily which they said used too much CPU. Betterfonts survived being on the front pages of Digg and Alexa when hosted by DH. Fontso is still hosted by Godaddy, which is $3.99/mo, only because I haven’t taken the time to move it.
No work required, basically. There are e-mails from visitors from time to time, most of them just saying “thanks”. Some will want you to identify a font for them from a graphic, which is usually an impossible task – I don’t try to do this unless I can immediately see what font it is. I have not done much to promote the websites; the new owner could probably benefit from giving this task a little attention.
I’m currently an M.sc student, and I’m selling these websites to partly pay for a semester abroad. It really is with a heavy heart I’m selling them.
Revenue Details:
Mostly Adsense, but I have been experimenting a little bit with Valueclick for some months. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to do the follow-up in a proper way. There are no particular reasons specifically related to these sites I am aware of causing revenues to be lower the last couple of months, guess it’s because there are no big advertisement campaigns or the “Valueclick experiment” being unsuccessful. It may seem like earnings in this niche is highly exposed to availability of relevant advertisement campains, at least with Adsense.
On April 18 I updated the Betterfonts design and implemented the affiliate program from FontMarketplace. If the new owner wants the old design without this integration, it can easily be rolled back by replacing only one file. If the new owner has some PHP skills, other affiliate programs such as Fonts.com could easily be implemented instead. They have more fonts, but they are however much more expensive, which I don’t really think fits the target group very well. On this day I also removed the Valueclick interstitial ads to test focused on the FMP affiliate program.
Unfortunately, so far the affiliate program has been a disappointment. PM me for details on earnings or assume nothing.
In the following overview, I am assuming here the exchange rate is constant at 1.5 EUR/USD (for Valueclick which pay me in Euros). Actually, it is currently even higher.
