Summary
Due to some personal reasons (more about that below) I’m selling my complete online business in its early stages. Revenue is generated by 3 automatic subscription sites where I offer short term options trading recommendations to paying subscribers (cooperation with a world-class professional options trader who is prepared to continue with the new owner).
The online investment business is really “hot” these days thanks to the abundance of free, online research & charting services, the low interest rates and the low broker commission costs. Just take a look at Agora Financial, a company that offers similar services and that has accumulated more than 100,000 paying subscribers so far…
Especially options trading (options on US stock) is “hot” these days. Options offer the advantages of leverage, low initial capital, limited risk & unlimited profit potential in up and down markets - advantages not offered by most other investment vehicles.
In 2007, options trading volumes increased by 41%, compared to the previous year (source: OIC-website, http://www.888options.com/press/default.jsp) and now even NASDAQ, the world’s largest electronic stock market, wants a piece of the pie and has started offering an options market early this year. For more proof about why options trading is so popular, you can have a look at the attached PDF.
I grew the business in 3 months from less than $200 profit/month to almost $1,700 profit/month (just with some basic Google Adwords advertising) and there’s still so much room for growth and improvement. I haven’t tried other traffic sources or done any split-testing yet because I just don’t have the time for it (more about that below).
If someone could focus fulltime on the marketing for a few months, I’m quite sure this business has the potential to become a 6- or 7-figure business soon.
Without any optimization, I saw an average conversion rate of 5.6% for the 3 websites in June (amount of new subscribers/amount of Adwords clicks - see attached PDF)
- Site 1 is my “company site”. This website was initially created to find and contact the best of the best short-term traders and investment advisors in the world in order to establish a partnership. Right now, since I have found a good trader, I mainly use this website to let my home-based business look like a relatively big, trustworthy company. This has advantages when contacting partners like brokerage houses (for instance for the autotrading or the affiliate-program you can read more about in the attached PDF) or negotiating deals with JV-partners or advertising companies. I also continue to receive applications from traders and investment advisors on that website.
- Site 2 is a website I bought in the beginning of this year. I hired a company to do a complete makeover. We changed the graphics and copy and added an automatic membership & payment script and a live chat feature (see attached PDF for more info).
On this website I offer 2-3 options trading recommendations per month to paying subscribers. For the trades, I work together with a world-class professional options trader. He does all the research and when he has found a good trading opportunity, he enters the trade in a secured html-interface that sends them out automatically to all active subscribers by e-mail and SMS (you can find more info about the service in the attached PDF). Everything goes automatically on this website. The only things that still have to be done is answering e-mails (very limited and I have information on how to outsource that very cheap) and keeping an eye on the marketing. - Site 3 is a variation of Site 2. I bought it at about the same time.
- Site 4 is a sales letter that’s just finished. Early this month, you should find it on Clickbank where it will get promoted by their affiliates. I offer the same service here as on the other 2 websites.
Reason for selling
I started this business together with a friend about 7 months ago. Based upon a survey we conducted with more than 200 online traders, we had learned that there was a big market for the service we wanted to provide (you can read more about this survey on site 1).
In short, we agreed that I would take care of the money part (the initial investments and an initial marketing budget) and my friend (who had some background in internet marketing) would take care of the marketing. We would outsource all the rest.
Unfortunately not everything always goes the way you want it to go. On January 25, my friend Paul had a fatal car accident…
Next to the loss of a good friend, there rose another problem: I already had a fulltime offline business to run and I didn’t have any online marketing experience at all… I first thought about outsourcing everything but that led me to the realization that everything is easy to outsource except for the marketing. Since we primarily wanted to work with paid advertising, I didn’t like the idea of letting some “stranger” play with my money. To make a long story short, I tried doing the marketing myself for about 3 months (with some success as you can read in the attached PDF) but it took me too much time (I had to start from zero) and I came to realize that the online world is nothing for me. I’m just not a computer guy; I prefer the person to person contact of my offline business. Also, my wife and I are expecting a baby in August… That’s why I decided to sell this complete business in its early stages. Definitely too soon to get the best value for it but so be it.
Because it’s just impossible to write down all information and details about this business on this page, I have created a detailed PDF-file with all the sale information and screenshots of revenue and traffic. You can view it here or in the attached PDF.
